FACT! Recycling just one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 15-watt low energy efficient bulb (equivalent to a 100-watt normal bulb) for 24 hours. Amazing isn't it!

Did you know that British households create over 26m tonnes of waste every year, of which only 12m tonnes is recycled, meaning that the remaining 14m tonnes goes to landfill? By having less waste in landfill, it can free up land for other uses and helps to reduce the amount of methane produced when biodegradable products are sent to landfill. As much as 80% of the items we now throw away can be recycled.

Despite Railwayscenics being a small business, we recognise that the amount of waste we produce could have an impact on the environment, not just locally but globally too. So, we are committed to do our best to reduce our waste, reuse items of packaging where possible and recycle plastics, paper and cardboard.

We are trying to make positive and effective changes throughout the business and are implementing new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste. By doing what we can, we can help you our customers increase your own sustainability efforts and decrease your carbon footprint.

FACT! Every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees

Reduce

Not only are we helping the environment by reducing our waste but we are also being more cost effective. Where possible we print documents double sided to save paper. We buy all of our stock in bulk from UK suppliers or wholesalers which saves on packaging and transport costs. We try to keep the materials we use to package our products to a minimum so that our customers throw away less and recycle more. We even switched to using brown paper tape where possible, rather than the usual brown or clear plastic tape. Our address labels are made from recycled paper, as is the paper your invoices are printed on. We sell our products to you individually, rather than in bundles or grouped together, therefore helping to reduce the waste and saving you from getting items you do not want or need.

FACT! Recycling five plastic bottles creates enough insulating fibre to fill a ski jacket.

Reuse

When we buy stock from our suppliers we do our best to reuse the packing bubbles, any plain cardboard boxes and plastic grip seal bags we receive. These are then used to package your orders and the best part is that almost all of it can be recycled. Rather than throw away paper that was misprinted or used as a draft we reuse it as scrap paper to write notes on, so that it gets a second use before it gets recycled.

FACT! Recycling a single glass bottle will save enough energy to power a laptop for half an hour.

Recycle

We recycle the cardboard, metal and plastic centres from all of our reels of wire, the paper backing from our address labels, printer ink cartridges when they are empty as well as any batteries that no longer work. Any packaging from our suppliers which we cannot reuse will be recycled where possible. All of our padded envelopes can be separated and recycled along with all of our plastic and cardboard packaging. The card and plastic protective outer packaging on some products can also be recycled with your normal household recycling service.

FACT! Recycling a single aluminium can will save enough energy to power a TV for up to three hours.!

The products we buy

We try where possible to buy environmentally friendly products. Many of these come from UK based manufacturers, suppliers or wholesalers, but with some electronic products that is not always possible. Where this is not possible we buy in bulk to save transprtation costs. All of our packaging materials are sourced from suppliers who use a percentage of recycled materials in the make up of their products.

To show that a product can be recycled after use, we have started adding a recycle logo to the product descriptions .
