A model railway backdrop, also known as a backscene, is a painted or printed background used to create a sense of depth and realism in model railway layouts. It typically depicts a scene such as hills, mountains, buildings, other landscape features or just sky, and is positioned along the back edge of the layout to provide a visual backdrop for the trains and scenery in the foreground.

Backscenes can be painted directly onto a wall or backdrop board, or they can be printed on large sheets of paper or fabric and affixed to the layout. They add depth and perspective to the model railway, helping to create the illusion of a larger, more expansive landscape beyond the confines of the layout itself.
